- Improve wide character (UTF-8) support, define LICENSE (MIT)
- Convert to option helpers and thus cleanup Makefile; running `make
  package OPTIONS_UNSET=DOCS -DBATCH' will produce a docless package
  without any pre-staging-era hacks in the Makefile
